“I didn't know how to kick a ball or play football, but they had all the confidence in me”

- Sharie

Case Study: Sharie

How did you get involved with Street Football Wales?

“I got involved with Street Football Wales through ‘Swansea Young Single Homeless Project’ (SYSPH). At this point I was living in Drew's supported house. They had a team called SYSPH Tigers, they asked me to play. At this point I didn't know how to kick a ball or play football, but they had all the confidence in me. This gave me the confidence to play for their team with a lot of different people and different teams. All the people were lovely and as I kept going my confidence grew more and more.”

What impact has it had on you?

“It has had a massive impact because before the World Cup I was so in my shell, I was really shy and I had no confidence. I didn’t want to go out, meet new people, do any activities. I thought there was no getting out of it. The thought of not being able to get a job or do any activities really got me down, so that’s why I decided to join in with Street Football Wales. Since joining I have gained so much confidence, got myself a job, joined even more activities and even supported people who found themselves in the same situation as I did. I couldn’t be more thankful for their support, they have given me the push that I needed to get me where I am now.”

Sharie is now supporting with the development of our female only sessions and attends weekly steering group meetings to shape the new programme. Sharie currently attends our Swansea development sessions around her work.

“I’m a believer in always trying something new, you don’t know if you like something until you try it.”

- David

Case Study: David

How did you get involved with Street Football Wales?

“I first heard about Street Football Wales through the Bridge programme which John is a staff member of. He promoted SFW by putting posters around the building. Ex-residents Mickey and Mark also encouraged me to attend. I’m a believer in always trying something new, you don’t know if you like something until you try it.”

What impact has it had on you?

”Attending the football sessions has improved my confidence and has taken my mind elsewhere. Since starting the sessions I have seen an improvement in my overall health and fitness. By attending, I have met new friends and different people. I’ve previously played rugby, but only ever watched Football on TV. By playing at Street Football Wales, I have a new sport to enjoy as well.”

David also represented SFW players on the interview panel during our recent recruitment process of a Development Officer. David formulated his own set of questions to ask prospective candidates based on his experience of Street Football Wales. David played a vital part in the recruitment process and helped come to a decision of the appointment. David explained that being involved with the new interview process has allowed him to learn new skills and grow in confidence. David has since supported the Bridge programme in their own interview process for staff members.

“Street Football Wales is so much more than just football”

- Wayne

Case Study: Wayne

How did you get involved with Street Football Wales?

“I was homeless on the streets of Cardiff and got offered a place on The Bridge program Salvation Army Ty Gobaith centre on Bute Street. Whilst there I got introduced to Street Football Wales and loved it from the moment I arrived. Staff and players are warm, welcoming and encouraging. I felt connected and accepted for the first time after many years of isolation and addiction.”

What impact has it had on you?

”The confidence and self belief that being part of a team had upon me is indescribable. Through the guidance and support on offer, I finally started to believe that I could achieve and live up to my potential. I can’t express enough gratitude to Street Football Wales and the impact it’s had upon my life.”

”To be part of such an amazing organisation gave me the opportunity to learn and grow as an individual as well as a team player. The qualifications and skills gained are endless. Through SFW I was able to get a full time job as an Outreach Worker for The Big Issue and pass my driving test. SFW is so much more than just football. We cater for players on an individual basis, rather than as a whole.”
